What is a Health Educator?

A health educator (HE) works with people to help them achieve optimal health and well-being. He or she may help people find health-promoting resources in their community. HEs also help people identify and manage health risks. They use interactive and educational approaches to engage people and help them understand how to stay healthy and safe.  This includes helping people make informed decisions about their personal health, the environment, and the economy. 

Health Educators are a part of the medical team in the US and can be found working in schools, hospitals, and in other community settings.

The field of health education has evolved to meet the needs of today’s society and the challenges of modern medicine. Health Education focuses on promoting health behavior and disease prevention by educating people in a variety of settings. Health education encompasses teaching about health issues, illness prevention, disease recognition, health promotion, and disease management.

Health educators have been used to help people with chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and heart disease. Health Educators work in health care organizations and schools and teach the public about health and wellness. The primary purpose of health education is to promote health and wellness among members of the community. HEs are employed in many types of schools and health care organizations in all 50 states. These settings include: public, private, parochial, charter, tribal, or home schooling institutions; hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and other healthcare centers; and state and federal agencies and departments. Education Requirements To become a HE, students must have a bachelor’s degree in health promotion, nursing, public health, or another related field.

Health education in schools is an integral part of health promotion and disease prevention. HEs also assist the medical team in providing patients with information about their diagnosis and treatments and teaching them ways to maintain or improve their health.

What do HEs do?

Health Educators work with diverse populations and communities throughout their careers. They work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities to improve the health and well-being of people. HEs work with children, youth, adults, older adults, immigrants, veterans, and underserved populations. They may teach people in public health, healthcare, education, business, and industry. They help people better understand their bodies, how they work, and how to stay healthy. Health Educators help people develop a healthy lifestyle by providing them with the skills and knowledge needed to make informed choices about their health.

Health education is closely related to public health because it emphasizes the importance of understanding social factors that affect a person’s health, such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic status, physical environment, and other life circumstances. Health education also promotes preventive care, early detection of diseases, and treatment of diseases. Health education is an important part of the practice of medicine and public health.  There are many opportunities for health educators to serve in various settings. Health education is a broad term that includes instruction in topics like nutrition, physical activity, and safety. It also includes education about the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.
